Naturally Brilliant: A Guide to Posh’s Caramel Colours & Burnt Sugars

At Posh, we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all. We specialize in developing caramel colours and burnt sugars tailored to each customer’s exact specifications—whether it’s colour intensity, viscosity, colloidal charge, or application stability. From clean-label alcoholic beverages to highly processed savoury formulations, our team works closely with partners to ensure each product meets both regulatory and functional goals.

Whether you need acid stability, protein compatibility, or a specific hue and flow, we offer precise, well-characterized solutions engineered to deliver consistent performance in your product.

Clean Label Solutions You Can Trust

Our Burnt Sugars and E150a Caramel Colours are developed to support clean labelling across food and beverage applications. Whether labeled as Burnt Sugar or Class I Caramel, the designation depends on its intended functional use—a distinction recognized under JECFA and EC110/2008 regulations. All our products fully comply with the AFNOR Norms NFV00-100 definition of aromatic caramel.

Class I (E150a) — Plain Caramel

Also known as Plain Caramel, Caustic Caramel, or Spirit Caramel, Class I (E150a) is the most natural type of caramel colour available today. These deep red-brown, slightly negatively charged liquids are made by carefully heating sugars with food-grade acids, bases, or salts—excluding ammonium and sulphite compounds.

Ideal for clean label applications, E150a is widely used at GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) levels across the food and beverage industry. With high alcohol solubility (up to 80%), it is especially well-suited for liquor and spirit applications, as well as premium sauces, baked goods, and more. Its visual range, from light reddish-yellow to deep reddish-brown, allows for tailored tone and appearance.

Class III (E150c) — Ammonia Caramel

Class III caramel colours are produced using ammonium compounds (but no sulphites), yielding a positive colloidal charge and rich red-brown tones. These caramels are known for their stability in protein- and salt-rich environments, making them ideal for savory foods, broths, gravies, beer, and other formulations that require colour consistency and resistance to precipitation or protein interaction.

Their versatility and resilience make them a favorite in recipes that demand color consistency and resistance to precipitation or protein interaction.

Class IV (E150d) — Ammonia Sulphite Caramel

Known as Acid-Proof Caramel, Class IV (E150d) is the go-to choice for acidic environments, such as cola concentrates and carbonated soft drinks. With a strong negative colloidal charge, E150d offers the darkest color spectrum—from light brown to dense black-brown—and exceptional stability under low pH conditions.

Our E150d range includes Single and Double Strength options, as well as tailored variants designed to meet specific technical needs across beverage, dairy, and industrial applications.

A Custom Fit for Every Application

From clean-label alcoholic beverages to highly processed savory formulations, Posh’s caramel solutions are developed not just for compliance—but for performance. Whether you need acid stability, protein compatibility, or a delicate natural hue, we offer precise, well-characterized products engineered to suit your exact requirements.

Looking Ahead

As consumer awareness grows and regulations evolve, manufacturers need partners who can offer technical know-how, transparent practices, and the flexibility to innovate. At Posh, we’re proud to be that partner—delivering caramel colours and burnt sugars that are as dependable as they are dynamic.
